A really effective and intuitive leader and mentor told me this years ago: There’s this common tactic of people in leadership positions to constantly try to over explain themselves. You see it in coaching, management, and elsewhere in leadership. It’s typically done with a pure heart because many of these leaders want you to “peer into their souls,” or to be understood. This is an enormous mistake. Notice, I said “over explain” and not “explain. An explanation of what they jokingly call in leadership schools your BHAGs (big, hairy, audacious goals), and your results is enough, because the people you work with deserve to know why they’re doing what they’re doing. But over explaining can easily be mistaken for weakness and insecurity. If you believe in your work, then lay it out there and move on. Your detractors won’t care, because it conflicts with their priors about you, and the people who appreciate your work don’t need an ongoing manifesto about it. As always, thanks for reading and for following.
