Visited BYD's global headquarters yesterday. Also saw this new BYD U9 car model, it was cool af.
For those unfamiliar with BYD, a basic fact: BYD sold 4.6 million EVs in 2025, the number for Tesla was around 1.64 million. One out of every five EVs sold globally is produced by BYD and is growing.
The internal discussions and on-site observations yesterday confirmed several core facts:
1. Technical advancements: The "Blade Battery," seen as their core competency, is not only safer and cheaper due to its LFP chemistry, BYD integrates the battery pack directly as part of the chassis structure. This design significantly increases energy density, and this core technology is used by BYD only.
For battery charging: the latest BYD Flash Charging 2.0, the peak charging power reaches 1500kW. Real-world testing shows it takes only 5 minutes to charge from 10% to 70%. Tesla's mainstream V3/V4 Superchargers are mostly capped around 250kW, requiring 15-25 minutes for the same charge.
2. Engineering and manufacturing foundation: Out of 960,000 global employees in 2024, 120,000 are dedicated purely to R&D. Meanwhile, the machine replacement rate on their production lines has exceeded 50%, with multiple core steps fully automated.
3. Hard capability in the high-end segment: The Yangwang U9 can directly compete with traditional supercars like Porsche in top speed and 0-100 km/h acceleration (2-second range). The design aesthetics are also quite solid.
4. Core management traits: After in-depth conversations with BYD's CIO and executive team, I found that the current generation of leaders in top Chinese enterprises have extremely broad cognitive boundaries and extensive knowledge of frontier tech, yet they are extremely grounded in execution. They follow pure first principles and are highly product-driven.
I used to work in Volkswagen Group China corporate innovation department, and it is fair to say, I was really impressed by BYD and not surprised by why they are surpassing so many traditional automotive companies.
