ERC-8004 went through a fairly major update last week. After digging into the changes, our takeaway is clear:
1⃣ Reputation should not be “calculated” inside the contract — this aligns perfectly with BAS’s previous viewpoint.
The real change in this ERC-8004 update isn’t about modifying interfaces; it’s about taking a clear side: Reputation should not be adjudicated on-chain.
The removal of feedbackAuth is a very explicit value judgment. The protocol layer has given up on ex-ante control of “who is allowed to give feedback,” and instead chosen to let any feedback be recorded.
This is not a retreat — it’s a deliberate trade-off. Because the reality is:
🔸Spam will always exist
🔸Sybil attacks cannot be completely solved at the protocol level
2⃣ ERC-8004 no longer pretends it can solve these problems. Instead, it retreats to what it should truly be responsible for: becoming a highly indexable, filterable, and composable reputation event layer. It doesn’t give you a score — it gives you raw facts.
This also explains why tags became strings, why the read API strongly emphasizes filtering, and why revoked feedback is not returned by default.
Every design decision is telling you the same thing:“How to interpret this data is not the protocol’s job.”For reputation builders, this is a kind of “forced maturity”: You can no longer rely on some official score.
You now have to clearly answer three questions:
🔸Who do I trust?
🔸Who do I ignore?
🔸How do I aggregate?
3⃣And this is exactly why attestations exist. A single piece of feedback means almost nothing by itself — its meaning comes from context. Who gave it? Was there real interaction? Was there economic behavior? Did it come from a trusted system? None of these should be hard-coded into ERC-8004.
From the perspective of BAS Attestation, this upgrade is almost an acknowledgment of reality: The credibility of reputation can only be constructed outside the protocol.
ERC-8004 is responsible for recording events. Attestations are responsible for interpreting events. The upgrade of agentWallet follows the same logic: “where I receive money” has moved from off-chain declaration to on-chain verifiable fact. This truly opens up space for payment-based reputation.
