Knowing that Tesla Semis are no longer theoretical, and that Pilot Flying J is now rolling out a national megawatt-level charging network built specifically for them, the words that Bill Gates said about Tesla Semis are starting to age very poorly.
Back in 2020, Gates publicly stated,
“Even with big breakthroughs in battery technology, electric vehicles will probably NEVER be a practical solution for heavy trucks.”
His reasoning was that batteries are too heavy, long range hauling would crush payload capacity, and the physics simply wouldn’t work for real world freight over long distances.
Now, fast forward to 2026:
1/ Tesla Semis are hauling real freight today,
2/ Fleets like PepsiCo are already logging 1,000 mile days, and
3/ Pilot Flying J, one of the LARGEST truck stop operators in the U.S., is deploying megawatt-level chargers across the country designed specifically for the Tesla Semi!
As a company you DO NOT build a nationwide megawatt charging network unless Tesla Semis are real and economically viable.
This is a big deal imo.
What makes this even more ironic is that Bill Gates also shorted Tesla stock while saying these statements. That short was confirmed in 2022 when Elon revealed BG was sitting on roughly a ~$500 million short position, which later grew into multi-billion dollar losses as Tesla kept executing and growing to a market cap of $1.5 trillion.
The thing is Bill Gates has once admitted the short was a mistake, but he’s never clearly said whether he fully closed it.
And Elon warned that if Tesla becomes the world’s most valuable company, that short position would “bankrupt even Bill Gates.”
Shorting the most innovative company in the world that’s proving out autonomy, energy, AI robotics, and now heavy trucking… the hurt is going to start compounding violently.
I low key hope Gates is still short.
Never bet against Elon and Tesla.
