Early readers end up grabbing lots of random books from their parents’ shelves, and end up with a stock of pop culture references that’s dated to about the average year their parents were buying books.

One result is that teachers and other non-family authority figures assume that these kids are really mature, but the kids who opt to read a ton rather than socialize often… aren’t especially.
