This face haunted me for years. I interviewed @jasonfried, founder of the massively successful @basecamp. On paper, the interview was great. We talked about how he built Basecamp into a project-management tool that brought in tens of millions dollars a year and he showed my audience how to bootstrap a profitable SaaS. But I was disappointed about one thing. At one point, I asked Jason, “Tell me about a setback.” I wanted to see his human side, something people could relate to. He said, “We didn’t have any.” So I pushed. And pushed. He finally looked into the webcam with this “enough already” stare and told me that some companies don’t have these kinds of problems. That response bothered me for years. As an interviewer, one of my goals is to get people to go deeper than they would on their own, to reveal problems and help us learn from their experiences. Years later, I hired the producer of an interview show I respected, Inside the Actor’s Studio. I admired how they got actors to ditch the PR-speak and go so deep that celebrities cried.
