Compounding in the out years with a long horizon is truly spectacular and hard to comprehend.
For example, assuming a 10% annual rate of return, $1m turns into:
- $11m after 25 years (😒)
- $117m after 50 years (🫡)
- $1.3b after 75 years (🤯)
- $14b after 100 years (🎉)
- $149b after 125 years (🔥)
Every 25 years is one generation, so if you want to leave a spectacular amount of capital to your great-great-great-grandkids, invest $1m in the US equity market (which has delivered 10% annually pre-tax between 1900 and 2025) and let it compound uninterrupted till 2150.
ZBB FOR PDE
At tech companies, PDE (PMs, designers and engineers) have been immune from zero based budgeting (see example below from Sprint a decade ago). We are going to see this start to change in 2026.
“Why 200 engineers? Why not 100?”
It won’t come in the form of layoffs (except maybe in rare cases) but through not backfilling attrited roles.
Obviously, certain roles even within PDE will be more impacted than others, depending on company. But it’s coming.
