Plummeting birthrates. Nihilism. Hyperindividualism. Etc. Many of the problems contributing to our apparent “dark age” are problems of culture. The defeatism around this on twitter is astonishing. It’s as if ppl haven’t noticed that culture is one of the most malleable historical forces Contrast this with the biggest contributor to former (real) dark ages: physical affliction. We were living paw-to-mouth for 99% of evolutionary history. Most people died from stuff that’s now trivial: a tooth abscess, a cut, a fever. And we fucking solved this for the majority of people on earth! You may live in a decade-long span where many ppl are confused about how to live a good life. But to despair over our current age of “godlessness,” as if it’s a permanent fixture? Ma’am. Bro. Chin up. Unlike polio, god isn’t going away Have you heard of the Axial Age? The Renaissance? The Anti-Slavery Movement? Culture can change dramatically in a relatively short span of time So you live in a historical blip where the culture is kinda dark (despite folks having access to immense power, knowledge, physical resources). What are you going to do about it – post about how bad things are? That’s just hypersitioning the “dark age” into being I propose an alternative: 1. Realize in your heart a great love 2. Become a student of history – studying how individual ppl & great groups changed culture A GREAT MANY TIMES 3. Do it yourself, as one who has unprecedented access to networks and material abundance
