A decade or so ago, computer scientists started invading statistics with their fancy "machine learning" stuff. This pissed off the statisticians to no end, since the CS guys renamed everything, ignored most of the statisticians' work, etc.

Unfortunately for the statisticians, regression trees and the like were much more useful than the stuff the stats guys were working on at that point. So now, a large % of young researchers in stats departments basically work on ML
And the terminology we use now is arguably closer to the CS guys' than the stats guys. What is the moral of this story? might makes right. If the LLM guys end up doing better math than the mathematicians, nobody is going to care how much coping the mathematicians do
