Want to know if you woke up on the right side of the bed today? There's actually a formula for that.
About 3 in 10 adults admit they often start the day feeling grumpy or "on the wrong side of the bed." But mathematician and broadcaster Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon has created a surprisingly simple equation to predict your morning mood — based on a survey of 2,000 UK adults.
The formula weighs the key elements of a good morning routine:
◉ Sleep (ideally at least 8 hours)
◉ Breakfast (around 18 minutes)
◉ Exercise (about 21 minutes)
◉ Showering (roughly 10 minutes)
◉ Mental prep (time for reading, puzzles, meditation, or other calming/engaging activities)
It also factors in your wake-up time (the "sweet spot" is around 6:44 am) and how much buffer you give yourself between getting out of bed and starting your day.
The equation produces a "good-mood score" (g) — and if it's 37 or higher, the math says you likely woke up feeling positive and ready. Score below 37? You're more prone to starting the day on the wrong foot.
What makes this formula smart is that it doesn't demand a rigid schedule — it adjusts for your actual wake-up time and how rushed (or relaxed) your morning feels. Skipping breakfast, skimping on sleep, or rushing out the door without mental warm-up time all drag the score down.
Of course, no equation can guarantee a perfect day. But in an era of constant stress and burnout, Dr. Imafidon's model gives people a clear, numbers-based way to understand — and gently improve — how their mornings set the tone for everything that follows.
