A lot of talk on the policy side re: companies making some "sacrifices" for patriotism re China (see nvidia). I agree but ... how can you expect ppl to forget the profit motive when the intelligentsia has been telling us for decades there's nothing good abt Western civilization?
Policy arrives on a cultural context. Patriotism has been hollowed out of its meaning, denigrated as obtuse, retrograde and even problematic. How can we even demand it when we lost the will to affirm it?
It feels like we lost the very register that allowed us to talk about this. Even then, Greed beats many, more principled ideals. But seriously: how can we expect a concept that has become so weak, so attacked to beat Greed?
