One theory I had that's been confirmed in the 2 years since Domestic Extremist was published: when it comes to deciding to have a baby, it's much harder to go from 0 to 1 than from 1 to 2, or 2 to 3. In other words, we need to spend more time inspiring people who are already good parents to add to their broods--instead of trying to pry committed little feminists off their drifting ice floes. And, this Christmas I was struck anew by a recent regret that I fear will sting more every year, which is the pang of not having that 6th kid. I miss him.
