Most people waste their week doing tasks they "should" be doing that don't move the needle.
The secret, though, is that sometimes you need to go all in and take a week off to go all in on your instincts.
All of my most viral projects (Mononoke, Kalshi, Zelda) were initially painful because I had to tell everyone in my life (wife, business partner, co-workers) that I need a creative vacation to take a risk on a moonshot idea.
In the case of Mononoke and Zelda, they were big legal risks as well because they're fan films.
But they'd keep me up at night, I needed to explore these worlds, even if others didn't understand or would make fun of me.
It was like playing a video game. It didn't feel like work, it was fun.
I was magically pulled in by curiosity, and I lost an entire week in the blink of an eye.
Curiosity and obsession are the bedrock of genius. (I'm still a far cry from genius but it is the mountain we climb as artists)
I see so many creative friends who fill most of their time with projects they "should" do to stay in business.
And they're right, but you need to take a major break at least once a quarter and spend a week entirely dedicated to something you're obsessed with.
One of the countless reasons I love AI filmmaking is that previously, if you had an idea for a short film, you'd have to save up for a year or more just to bring it to life.
We now get to do that with any world, instantly.
It's crazy how many inbound calls we've had (at my ad agency) because of Zelda.
It didn't make business sense. It wasn't easy. But it was the most fulfilling week I've had in a year.
