Resources For Modern Friend Villages / Co-Living / Co-Housing (Private Houses + Shared Common Spaces, Living Walking Distance To Your Friends & Siblings & Their Families)
templates & how-to: co-housing (look for books by durrett), supernuclear newsletter (@gillianim, @levin_phil)
pop up villages: all of the edge city meetups (@JanineLeger, @timourxyz) esp edge esmeralda's (healdsburg, just north of SF) city week (@devonzuegel)
super walkable cities: copenhagen, barcelona, las catalinas in costa rica (lots of construction?), more
things in this direction: prospera (@erickbrimen), network school (@balajis), fractal (@Prigoose, @__drewface, @TylerAlterman), tetra (@danallison)
places being built: esmeralda, ca forever (@jansramek)
walkable places in usa: serenbe (georgia), culdesac (tempe AZ, @ryanmjohnson), santa barbara
the vibe:
challenges: locations of jobs and families. visas. time and effort!
goal: live within 5 min walk of multiple friends & family members
end visions/setups: 1) buy/rent near each other in a walkable city 2) build houses on a large plot of land 3) build one house with multiple separate wings for each family to satisfy usa building requirements of max dwellings 4) all live in a courtyard block (@UrbanCourtyard family friendly apartments around a shared park) 5) buy/rent near each other on a street/culdesac
alternatives: host lots of events in your existing neighborhood (2 hour cocktail party, @nickgraynews), join an existing third space (country club? cafe?) or rent one as a group (clubhouse)
ways to get there if your family is worldwide: 1) write a big check - buy land, build for others, buy people investor visas if they need to immigrate 2) go to an easier country (panama, costa rica, portugal or spain if remote workers) 3) rotate around multiple places for a while? 4) two anchor places, 6 months/6 months
other similar things: boundless life (traveling 3 month school), traveling village, cabin city (@JonathanHillis), fractal campus, sf commons (@patriciamou_, @adimelamed_0), neighborhood (@jasoncbenn)
best existing inspiration: courtyard blocks in denmark (see pics on @UrbanCourtyard, i haven't found videos), co-housing communities in denmark (search yt for denmark cohousing), grad student housing in some universities (private units, shared backyard around a playground, located in the middle of a highly walkable and lively campus - eg stanford's escondido village has 4x ~50 "Family Courtyard Communities" - single family houses built around playground backyards)
to explore cities search youtube for [place] walking tour
who wants this the most? people who really are seeking that college dorm vibe again, or families that want to homeschool and aren't tied to a specific city for a job (eg lifestyle business owners)
builders and other people to follow who are in this direction: @AustinTunnell, @Cobylefko, @berkie1, @damonhemmerding, @Tesho13, @bobbyfijan, @davegordon14, @urbanistvc, @Chris_Smeder, plus those already tagged (i'm missing people - please tag, and i'm missing resources - please add!)
lots of people want this a lot, and also it's very hard to coordinate. to do it with your friends it probably needs either a) a strong-willed leader who is good at rallying people or b) incrementalism and lots of time and small steps (one friend rents, then another, then another, over years)
good luck; have fun!
