I’ve been working on agency-based alternatives to conventional schooling for decades, and the criticism is always the same: “But this is only for wealthy families.” That misses what’s actually happening. Education savings accounts (ESAs) are expanding rapidly and will reach tens of millions of students using public funds. Homeschooling among low-income African American families has increased several-fold. Meanwhile, the best educational material in the world is already freely accessible online. This is how technological change always unfolds. It begins with early adopters and gradually becomes universal.
