This post went way more viral than I expected so here are a few thoughts before the internet declares SF as a war zone. A neighbor I’d never met taped up my window in the rain and left me a note offering to help get it fixed. That’s the version of SF I actually see. Far from perfect, but full of people who will drop what they're doing to help someone they don't know. I moved here 2 years ago out of college thinking it would be temporary before I inevitably ran off to New York. Instead I ended up actually liking it! The people, the biking, the startup pitches in the coffee shop line. I don’t think SF is nearly as apocalyptic as the internet wants you to believe. Yeah the crime sucks. And yes it’s ironic and kind of depressing that I live in the city of self-driving cars, computers gaining consciousness, people casually pushing the limits of science and technology... yet we still can't prevent my car windows from getting smashed on a Thursday morning? Every big city has problems though, and none of them get fixed overnight. At the end of the day, the thing that makes me stay is people who actually look out for each other. Even when it's just taping up some stranger's busted car window.
