The director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo leads a veterinary team to "braces a hippo" to closely monitor the oral health of "Pee Pae".
On March 24, 2026, Mr. Narongwit, the director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, along with a team of veterinarians and hippo caretakers, conducted a health check and provided oral treatment for "Pee Pae," the famous male hippopotamus of the zoo.
It was found that Pee Pae's lower teeth had grown abnormally long, piercing through the upper gum wall. The veterinary team then performed a "lower tooth trimming" to prevent injury, infection, and to help him eat normally.
Trimming teeth in hippos is considered necessary health care, as hippo teeth continue to grow throughout their lives. If there is an abnormal bite or uneven wear, it can lead to oral wounds, affecting their ability to eat and overall health. The treatment will be closely monitored by veterinarians, with anesthesia administered and symptoms observed safely.
This operation reflects the animal welfare standards of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, which emphasizes physical health, oral health, and the quality of life of the animals in their care. The veterinary team conducts regular health checks and plans appropriate treatments to minimize pain and stress for the animals as much as possible.
"Pee Pae" or "Pee Nueng" is a male hippopotamus beloved by tourists, born on October 11, 1989, currently about 36 years old. He is the 11th son of "Mae Mali" and "Paw Nueng" and is also one of the members of the famous hippo family at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, which has a bond with "Kha Moo" and other celebrity hippos.
After the treatment, Pee Pae is in good health and is under the close care of the veterinary team, amidst the affection from staff and tourists who continuously cheer him on.
