There are very few men in the history of mankind who could get 60,000 people jumping out of their seats, screaming at the top of their lungs, and millions around the world on the edge of theirs.
It’s hard for me to fully explain just how much of a cultural icon Stone Cold Steve Austin was. As the kids say, “you just had to be there.”
From a business standpoint I think about this quite a bit. And I think it serves as an amazing marketing case study, because the WWF did something that was so special, captivating, and viral. And they did it during a time when social media didn’t exist and virality was far more difficult to achieve. It wasn’t just a cultural phenomenon in the U.S. Chinese, German, Canadian, Mexican, the world embraced this character in an insane manner.
So yeah Stone Cold the character was cool, but the business case itself was truly one of a kind.
