In couples with both disabled and gifted children, fertility is responsive to the type of child they just had. A gifted kid increases the odds of a subsequent birth, whereas a disabled child reduces them.

In the wider population, where parents don't just have contrasting kids, all estimated effects of kids on the probability of future kids are negative. The causal identification comes from the contrast and it's backed up by contrasting sex results, too.
