NVIDIA announced Earth 2, a free, open source AI weather forecasting platform that does what used to require billion dollar supercomputers. They released three AI models that work together to predict weather. From processing raw satellite data to delivering 15 day global forecasts, all running on GPUs in minutes instead of hours. Here's what each piece does. Data Assimilation takes observations from satellites, weather balloons and ground stations and turns them into usable weather data in seconds (previously took hours). Nowcasting handles severe weather prediction for the next 0-6 hours. For the first time, AI just beat traditional physics based forecasting at predicting storms. Medium Range gives 15 day global forecasts and outperforms Google DeepMind's GenCast on most variables.​​ When combined, these models produce forecasts in minutes. Since everything is open source, anyone can download the models and customize them with their own data. NVIDIA's real genius here, they're not selling you software.
