I absolutely refused to take up golf until 3 years ago even though my great uncle taught me how to swing a club when I was 12. I avoided the sport because I had a) too little free time that I was willing to commit to learning, b) known folks who played obsessively and that was my impression of the norm, and c) too few women in my network to play with. Thanks to lovely encouraging new friends - men and women - who patiently let me tag along when they played, I picked it up. This weekend was my first EVER formal lesson and I overcame my fear of the hybrid (turns out it’s not a driver used without a tee).
Some quick thoughts: ladies (and anyone else feeling like a golf outsider) don’t be deterred by golf stereotypes! It’s a fun way to be outdoors with friends. It doesn’t have to take all day (9 holes in 90 minutes, anyone?). It’s healthier - and the same time - as a long, boozy weekend brunch. And - bluntly - for those in business, it’s an incredibly useful skill. Good attitude and fast pace make up for an imperfect game!
Rooting for everyone trying it out! For everyone like @alexisohanian working to make golf more accessible!
