If you read any of my story time posts in 2026, make it this one. A good friend of my family is a frontline emergency services worker. They are a single parent and they recently got told they would have to move out of their rental. During the recent big storms the roof leaked which saw the ceiling cave in, in several rooms. They are now living in what is left of the house before they are forced to leave. They are frantically trying to get another rental by the end of next week but so far they have had no luck. This was always going to be a challenging situation, but in the midst of the rental crisis a single income earner with kids trying to get a home is a nightmare. They are just one of the people I have heard from who are struggling to put a roof over their head through no fault of their own. Ultimately the ongoing rental crisis is 100% a government policy choice, their own vacancy rate projections show that and I'm tired of people justifying this train wreck of needless suffering.
