The most foolish behavior I've seen is when someone just makes a bit of money and can't wait for the whole world to know.
And what happens?
Trouble follows one after another. Our ancestors pointed out this pitfall over two thousand years ago: "Still waters run deep, shine without dazzling." When things are going smoothly, you should keep your mouth shut.
"Shine without dazzling" doesn't mean you should extinguish your light, but rather don't blind others with it. Human nature has its darkness: if you flaunt your beauty, you attract envy; if you show off your wealth, you invite scheming; if you reveal your true feelings, you might get trampled. Liu Zhenyun sees it clearly: showing off is the beginning of risk.
Why? When envy goes too far, it turns into jealousy. When jealousy takes root, malice sprouts. "A tree that stands out in the forest will be blown down by the wind"; it's not the wind that's bad, it's human nature.
Truly powerful people have long set their lives to "silent mode." It's not cowardice, it's clarity. Pride invites loss, humility brings benefits. Ripe wheat knows to bend down, and wise people know to hide their sharpness.
The "I Ching" says, "A humble gentleman governs himself with modesty." This low profile is the foundation of stability and the moat built for oneself.
To hold onto good fortune, the key is to hide two things well:
1. Thoughts: Keep them to yourself. Don't let them become fodder for others' gossip or give them leverage over you. True growth often takes root in silence.
2. Abilities: Keep three parts hidden. Especially in front of acquaintances, showing too much sharpness can hurt feelings and provoke malice. Your capabilities will be proven over time; there's no need to rush to prove yourself.
"A heavy sword has no edge, great skill is unrefined." True strength doesn't need to be flaunted. Still waters run deep, strength is hidden within; shine without dazzling, sharpness is retracted within. Only when you are adept can you wait for the right moment to act.
In the rest of your life, walk steadily and guard your heart. Don't reveal mountains, don't show water; nourish your strength in low profile, and settle wisdom in humility.
