Suppose that politicians were to face severe consequences if they ran a budget deficit whilst they were in office. Do you think that budget deficits would cease to exist? Suppose that judges were to face severe consequences if they frivolously let loose repeat violent offenders who then commit other crimes? Do you think that such leniency would cease to exist? Once you fully remove the link between actions and their consequences, you violate a fundamental defining feature of life. Elected officials at most face the consequences of not being elected again. This is grotesquely insufficient and is a severe frailty of our system.
