Seeing my interview with Roy — which was coincidentally the last interview I did for TC — and the following coverage has sparked a lot of discussion. Some thoughts: 1) This is not a hit piece. I didn’t have a part in writing this story since I left TC last week. But if you read it, you’ll see that @MTemkin just does a great job of contextualizing what Roy said onstage. 2) If you watch the full interview, you’ll see Roy open up about how Cluely has become the benchmark for his strategy around brand and marketing, and the challenges in converting eyeballs into lasting users. We asked for user/revenue metrics, and he declined — which is all fair. Cluely is a young startup, but Roy’s ideas are already quite influential among Silicon Valley leaders. Cluely seems to be part of a broader shift in how tech thinks about brand and marketing, so it’s worth watching. Also, I think this interview is one of Roy’s best, so I’d just generally recommend watching it. 3) In my conversations with Roy in and around this interview, I found him to be a very thoughtful, smart, and nice guy. His online persona seems, to me at least, like a carefully designed caricature of himself, which i actually find quite common these days for tech CEOs. Too early to tell if Roy’s thesis works out for Cluely, but I’m excited to keep watching him build. Back to my time off before the new gig 🫡
