Now, Eliezer might claim he's not trying to incite violence, but then why does he speak of people doing scientific research as "trying to exterminate you"?

History says, pay attention to people who declare a plan to exterminate you -- even if you're skeptical about their timescales for their Great Deed. (Though they're not *always* asstalking about timing, either.)
@zackmdavis It is of course be bad enough that he's trying to block clearly beneficial research and development because of a fantasy he adopted as a teenager. However, he's now crossed an important line. He and his followers are now becoming a physical threat to the lives of lots of people.
@zackmdavis It's not even "threat" in the sense of "blocking important lifesaving medicines" or the like, it's "threat" in the sense that "his followers are going to start murdering people." This is no longer ignorable.
The AI systems that have been built in the real world don't require "alignment"; they look nothing like Eliezer's fantasy systems and no plan to keep them from killing everyone is necessary because such systems clearly have no interest in doing so. If you say to people "what is your plan to keep your steel mill from igniting the atmosphere!" they need not produce a plan for you.
