ChatGPT is now a browser. ChatGPT is coming to kill Chrome/Safari and become THE internet for the newer generation of users and the future. No need to visit websites; every website will be brought to ChatGPT. ChatGPT will handle all edit/post interactions through POST requests/MCP calls in the backend. In the same way that ChatGPT has redirected attention from information sites to the ChatGPT interface (RE: Cloudflare crawl-per-visit ratio collapsing, sending less traffic to the original site), it brings the relevant information from the site to the ChatGPT interface; they are trying to own all of the user attention on the ChatGPT UI. This is a natural continuation, but the new Apps SDK brings a new ability: the Ability to make changes. Why install a browser if you can do everything you need to do on ChatGPT, where you keep going back to anyway? What this means: ---- 1) New App Store & design paradigm: With ChatGPT owning newer generations, many websites will increasingly need to build agent-first design, if they want to capture younger generations who increasingly don't use the browser and stay on ChatGPT. Lots of interesting opportunities in converting old websites to be compatible with the Apps SDK, particularly around passing app context to agents 2) Security: We'll now be re-running the entire browser-level security history from Mosaic all the way to the V8 Engine, since now ChatGPT can make agentic changes to various data sites. More data leaks. More jailbreak & manipulation opportunities. These are the risks we are trying to solve at @edison_watch, for this new paradigm of secure browsing. Given that the Apps SDK is an open standard, I anticipate many of the other consumer-facing AI chat apps will be adopting this too, and we are at the very beginning of a new browser wars once again. Future Q: What will the OS owners do - will Microsoft adopt Apps SDK to Microsoft Copilot, and is it the new Internet Explorer? Apple to enhance Siri Chat as the new form of Safari. History repeats but not rhymes, and ultimately these folks have most influence on what gets used. ---- p.s.
