Some words of advice for those going through a cofounder breakup - it’s a messy emotional experience on both sides. Really make sure that you reach out to your friends and family for support instead of trying to deal with everything alone. Reach out to other founders who have been in a similar situation for advice. Don’t drag out the process - the longer it takes to wrap everything up the worse it is on both sides. Get a mediator if you guys can’t come to an agreement. You will both feel like you got screwed over, so a mutual non disparagement agreement is a very common thing to sign once everything is wrapped up.
You may feel like you lost your sense of identity with the company, and perhaps your best friend as well. You may feel that there’s nothing to live for anymore. After all, this was your whole life’s work. There will be days when you couldn’t eat and couldn’t sleep and you feel like you’re going through the motions of living without truly being alive.
Take a break. Focus on your recovering your mental and physical health. Travel. Do a road trip if you couldn’t afford to fly. Get out of the city that you’ve been stuck inside. Go on side quests and cross off all the bucket list items that you haven’t had time to do - now you have all the free time in the world. Rebuild the friendships and relationships that you’ve neglected during the time that you’re focused on your startup. Really take time to figure out what makes you you outside of the company, and take as long as you need to figure out what you want your life’s work to be next.
And sometimes the best way to get over a cofounder breakup is to start something new after the break. Forge a new identity for yourself and think deeply about what you’ll do differently this time. Make sure that you mold the startup to fit around the way that you want to live your life, rather than you trying to change up your life to do the startup.
And know that it will all be ok in the end and you will heal. It’ll take some time and lots of work to get there. And I hope you find it in your heart to one day learn to love and forgive your former cofounder despite everything, because after all, they are only human too.

Some news to share:
A couple months ago, I stepped away from my role as cofounder at Ego due to differing visions for the company's future. I remain incredibly bullish on Vish, the team, and the space they're building in.
When we started Ego, we believed gaming and interactive media would become the next generation of social spaces: digital third places where people could hang out with their friends and truly feel present online even without physically being present in person. I experienced this firsthand during COVID lockdowns, playing Genshin, Minecraft, and Fortnite with friends on Discord while thousands of miles away in Wisconsin. It's the same vision that drives Zuck and Meta's Metaverse ambitions, and I'm grateful I got to contribute to it during my time at Reality Labs. I still believe gaming and interactive media will serve as the new breeding ground for a new type of social interaction online. Now, with AI agents that behave in increasingly humanlike ways, there's an incredible opportunity to reshape how humans and AI interact in digital spaces - both in games and beyond.
As for what’s next:
After taking time to recharge (and learning some cool skills from my incredible friends - flying planes, forging knives, archery, plus other sidequests I'll tell you about in person!), I've realized my calling is to build again. I'm grateful to @garrytan for believing in me and welcoming me in the YC F25 batch, which just kicked off this week.
I still care deeply about building human relationships and social spaces, which is why I'm now focused on the consumer AI space. More to come soon!
