Noble lies only work in high trust societies where there’s an understanding of who the lie for. When that understanding flips, or when the polite masses who go along with it are made out to be the villain, it all falls apart very quickly.

A recurring observation on talent when doing references, though most common in big companies: you rarely hear complaints about mediocre or even “solid” people. Only low performers and high performers. People dislike low performers for the same reason: they don’t perform. When people dislike high performers, they dislike them for different reasons. Everyone has a specific, unique complaint and they’ll talk to you about it for as long as you’re willing to listen. The “solid” reference is often a trap that identifies good, not outstanding, people.
