A Thai can pick the Chinese Dai ethnic group, they're cousins of Thai. A Korean can pick the ethnic group Korean, as they are one of the 56 ethnic minorities. So are Kazakhs, Mongols, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Tajiks and Russ for Russian, Gin for Vietnamese. HOWEVER, if you're an European, other than Russian, or an American, African, Arab or Pacific islander, then you must pick and chose from the existing 56 ethnicities. If you don't have a preference, then you are automatically labelled as Han. You cannot make up your own ethnicity, as China is a multiethnic ethnostate, all the recognized ethnicities in China are indigenous to the lands that makes up the country of China, the last time we opened up our ethnic group quota was in 1979.
