Creating the Cheongnyangni Traditional Market ˙K Global Market˙… Oh Se-hoon "Combining Tradition and Symbolism"
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited the Cheongnyangni area to announce plans for the 'Cheongnyangni Traditional Market Innovation Project', which aims to develop the traditional market and hanok into a world-class attraction. The plan includes utilizing the abandoned hanok village near the market to create a hanok experience space, transforming it into a global traditional market that embodies historical and symbolic significance, similar to Barcelona's 'La Boqueria'.
On the afternoon of the 23rd, Mayor Oh began his tour at Gyeongdong Market, followed by visits to Yangnyeong Market and the fruit market, stating, "Through this innovation project, we will not only improve facilities but also establish programs linked to 'hanok'." He emphasized, "We will elevate the Cheongnyangni traditional market into a world-class destination where history, culture, and emotions come alive."
The project aims to create a 'hot place' that combines market vitality with the charm of hanok. Mayor Oh stressed, "Traditional markets are now becoming a cultural tourism hub that provides visitors with a 'Seoul-like experience' and serves as a driving force for the local economy."
This project is the second phase of the 'Seoul-style Innovative Traditional Market Project', following the Namdaemun Market initiative. It will involve improving the aging facilities and narrow walkways of nearby markets, developing programs linked to 224 modern hanoks that have been converted into or abandoned as cold storage, and reconfiguring spaces. This area, where nine traditional markets are clustered, is the largest naturally occurring traditional market in Seoul, formed in the 1960s, and despite its historical and cultural assets, it has lost competitiveness due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the increase in single-person households, and the expansion of online distribution, leading to a decline in the commercial district.
The city plans to first apply specialized designs to the market alleys to create pedestrian-friendly walkways and expand basic amenities such as information centers and public restrooms, as well as public support facilities equipped with experiential content like shared kitchens and cooking classes. Additionally, it will directly purchase abandoned modern hanoks to create a variety of themed cultural spaces such as cafes, food places, and hanok stays that everyone can enjoy, and restore the unique historical and identity features that the Cheongnyangni area markets have traditionally possessed through the maintenance of hanok alleyways like 'Hanok Yard' and 'Hanok Restrooms'.
Furthermore, in the central public parking lot area of the market, a two-story eco-platform will be installed to realize the design innovation of the traditional market, and a three-dimensional walkway connected to the rooftops of surrounding buildings will be constructed to utilize spaces for gardens, event zones, and restrooms for visitor stays. A total of eight innovative projects are scheduled to be implemented sequentially starting in 2027.
