BREAKING | The Church in Jerusalem Confirms: No Closure of Churches or Suspension of Prayers -- Circulating Rumors Are False
The Holy Land | March 18, 2026
Following the spread of inaccurate reports on social media claiming that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem has been closed indefinitely, church authorities have issued an official clarification stating that these claims are false. They urged the public to verify information carefully and not be misled by rumors.
The statement noted that the region has faced similar circumstances in the past—during periods of unrest, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other crises—yet prayers were never fully suspended, nor were churches permanently closed. Instead, liturgical life continued within approved frameworks.
The church is closed to visitors, while prayers continue inside as usual, conducted by the clergy and monks according to their respective rites.
It emphasized that in times of war or heightened security tension, priority is given to following the instructions of official authorities.
The statement added that if the current situation persists, temporary measures may be introduced, such as limiting attendance at services or strengthening security arrangements. However, this does not mean a ban on prayers or the suspension of religious rites, which will continue in accordance with applicable regulations.
According to Alhusseini Joudeh Adeeb, Custodian of the Keys of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Seal Holder of the Holy Tomb in Jerusalem: “Regarding the closure of holy sites in Jerusalem, particularly the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Al-Aqsa Mosque, this is not an isolated or minor decision, but rather part of a general state of emergency imposed due to the serious security developments in the region, amid the ongoing war between Israel and Iran.
These measures, as difficult as they may be, are taken to protect lives and ensure public safety. They must be understood within the complex and dangerous reality facing the region. Compliance with these instructions is not a political stance, but a necessary response to exceptional circumstances affecting everyone.”
The Church in Jerusalem reaffirmed its commitment to its spiritual mission and pastoral care under all conditions, calling on the faithful to remain calm, trust official guidance, and uphold the spirit of prayer and peace during this sensitive time.
