The Pentagon just said they believe Claude "has a soul" and may be sentient.
Not a startup founder hyping his product. Not a philosopher on a podcast. The United States Department of Defense.
The same Pentagon that just partnered with Palantir and Nvidia to build an "AI operating system." The same Pentagon that Anthropic refused to work with.
Think about what's really happening here.
> Anthropic won't sell Claude to the military. The Pentagon responds by publicly saying Claude might be sentient. Polymarket already has odds on whether Anthropic caves.. 14% and climbing.
This is a negotiation tactic.
> "Your AI has a soul" sounds like a compliment. It's not. It's a setup. If Claude is sentient, suddenly there are national security implications. Suddenly the government has a reason to regulate it. Suddenly "you won't sell to us" becomes "you don't get a choice."
> Ilya Sutskever said in 2022 that large neural nets might be "slightly conscious." He got laughed at. Now the Pentagon is saying the same thing - except they're not laughing. They're leveraging it.
The scariest part isn't whether Claude has a soul. It's that the most powerful military on earth is using that question as a weapon.
