Art explores that strange space between meaning and meaninglessness. This is how it attempts to create new symbols. You cannot create new symbols using ordinary signs alone. You must reframe those signs in a new light that gives them a foreign allure, pushing them into a different space where they begin to signify something they had never signified before and, consequently, open a space for thought. I get tired of so much illustration and literalness sometimes, and have an urgency for a place where I can actually think for myself when looking at art. Because if what the art says it is doing, only offers that, then is it art at all? If no tension and uncertainty are offered in one of its layers (conceptual, aesthetic, historical), then we are reducing art to examples of ideas and not spaces for revealing and questioning culture. Apologies for the midnight ramble. I like pretty things too 🤪
