The U.S. State Department is developing an online portal called "freedom(dot)gov," which would allow citizens of European countries to bypass local censorship and view content restricted by their governments.
This initiative was spearheaded by the Trump administration to challenge the EU Digital Services Act, which requires platforms to remove "harmful" content such as alleged hate speech and disinformation.
A spokesperson for the European Commission stated that they "strongly" condemned freedom(dot)gov, framing it as a direct shot at their democratically decided digital legislation.
The website is expected to host content blocked by European governments and may include a built-in VPN feature to make user traffic appear as if it originates from the U.S..
