During the Victorian era, many beaches enforced laws requiring strict separation between men and women, sometimes keeping them dozens of feet apart. To work around this, women used “bathing machines”—horse-drawn, enclosed cabins rolled into the surf so they could enter the water and swim in complete privacy.
