I'm going to spend $100k this year buying cryptoart from artists trying to get established. It'll come out to around 1E per week. It's not nearly enough but hopefully it helps. @musicalnetta, who is way better at this than I am, will be helping me. Here's how it works:
1) We'll buy the work 2) We'll invite the artist to do a small writeup about themselves and the work 3) Lanett and I will discuss why we bought it The mission is to elevate artists. That's it. I don't have investors or some sort of agenda to flip this and get rich. It's all my own money and I'm doing it because I'm just tired of seeing so many good artists struggle here. So rather than whine about it I've decided to do something.
A few things to note: - We will be doing open calls for work about once a month, but I anticipate ~50% of the works we buy to be outside of these calls. Lanett and I spend a lot of time enjoying digging for art and not everyone is into open calls - I get it. We'll find you. But NO SHILLING outside of the open calls. There are subtle ways to show off your work without shilling.
- I have no idea wtf I'm doing. I am not a curator, nor an art critic. I have no formal art training or art history background. Writing about the works I buy is honestly going to be terrifying because I know what I like but I don't know how to articulate it. I'll be learning along the way and I'll be learning a lot from Lanett, who again is much better at this than I am
- All works must be on ETH mainnet and have a link and asking price. We both have day jobs and work/family commitments and it's too difficult to try and track people down
- Most purchases will be for primary works. The idea is to get money in the hands of the artist and though secondary sales help, now that royalties have been destroyed it's much harder to justify
- This is not a contest. As I have already stated, I have no idea wtf I'm doing and the reality is that $100k simply isn't enough. Most artists won't be a part of this. It sucks I know. But also understand that taste is subjective and maybe my taste is terrible so don't take a purchase or not a purchase as some sort of judgement. It's just two people who like art.
- A lot of you mentioned expanding in socials beyond Twitter so I have an Instagram account in my profile and I'm going to spend time there trying to build it out. I'll post about our purchases there too. Let's see if we can onboard a few folks over there this way.
- We like to spar a lot but I want to tip my hat to the Medici team: @CozomoMedici @kdean and @GBMedici have been doing this for ages already and I've always loved it. I now have even more appreciation for all their efforts. Much respect to you 3.
Finally, this will be an ongoing program I think. Lanett and I have a few ideas on how to dip our toes into more patronage in 2027, so stay tuned for that one Also, I should have another fun announcement coming in the next few weeks based around education.
No more sitting around. The program starts new. Follow @musicalnetta who will be running the monthly callout for art. Happy to answer any questions.
