Spend the past week thinking of areas that I think will be interesting in the agentic economy in 2026. The "Generative" > "Agentic" shift came down to 6 themes I think have the most interesting momentum for the next few months. The Integrated Web (SaaS & Enterprise) 1) Agentic Commerce: The move from search to fulfilment. Personal agents don't just suggest products; they negotiate prices and execute checkouts. Brands are pivoting from SEO to AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) so their data is "agent-readable." 2) Agent Teams & Swarms: The Digital Assembly Line. Anthropic's new "Agent Teams" feature allows a lead agent to spin up specialized "teammates" for research, coding, and legal review in parallel. We’ve moved from managing a chatbot to managing a high-output autonomous squad. 3) Legacy Interface Automation: The end of "swivel-chair" work. Using "Computer Use" capabilities, agents now navigate old enterprise software (ERP, SAP, Mainframes) just like a human, clicking buttons and moving data. Goldman Sachs reported recently, this is how high-stakes "back-office" tasks are finally being automated without needing expensive API overhauls. --- For Crypto 4) Agentic Identity (ERC-8004): The "Passport" for AI. This standard gives agents a verifiable on-chain identity and reputation. It moves the web from anonymous bot traffic to verified digital representatives that merchants can actually trust to transact with. 5) Value Handshakes (x402): The activation of HTTP 402 "Payment Required." Agents now settle micro-invoices instantly via stablecoins. It enables a "pay-as-you-think" economy where agents buy data and compute in fractions of a cent. 6) Intent-Based AgentFi: The "Invisible" Wallet. We’ve stopped clicking buttons and started giving agents "intents" (e.g., "keep my savings in 5% yield"). Agents monitor and manage risk autonomously across DeFi protocols 24/7. --- This doesn't mean many of these need a token, but some will clearly use them as the "oil" for these machine-to-machine interactions. Worth watching closely.
