He was an accountant at a company that gave fixed priced energy costs rather than giving variable energy costs based on time of day. The company would indiscriminately contact people saying "your energy costs X, if you switched to us it would cost you Y".
In cases where people were particularly cost conscious, switching to his company could cost as much as 3x. He and his division were eventually reprimanded for having their screensavers as particularly egregious examples of bar graphs for how much more one could spend by switching
