But I don't want ICE to "stand down." I want individual ICE/BP agents involved in shootings to be investigated and held accountable if it is determined their actions were not justified. But all ICE operations don't have to halt during that process.
The overwhelmingly vast majority of ICE apprehensions occur without incident. But quiet competence doesn't make headlines. We can't let a handful of viral videos depicting tragedies or morally controversial actions color our perception of the entire operation.
This should be the messaging put out by the Trump administration instead of the hyperbolic lies they state minutes after a tragedy occurs that are easily disprovable by video evidence.
I do not believe there is a systemic problem with ICE. Any law enforcement agency could benefit from more training, but rare tragedies will still occur even with the most well-trained law enforcement officers given the extent of the operations and the constant interference and agitation taking place. A few bad outcomes among hundreds of thousands of good outcomes is not a justification to halt operations.
Perfection is impossible, and left-wing activists know and exploit this fact. They know the psychological effect that viral videos have on the public. We can't let their tactics prevent us from enforcing immigration law.
