India bans Monero ($XMR), Zcash ($ZEC), and Dash ($DASH).
India's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) has issued a directive to registered cryptocurrency exchanges and platforms, requiring them to halt deposits, withdrawals, and trading of privacy-focused coins like Monero ($XMR), Zcash ($ZEC), and Dash ($DASH).
This stems from updated AML (anti-money laundering) and compliance guidelines, with reports surfacing prominently around January 22-23, 2026.The core concern is that these "privacy coins" (also called anonymity-enhancing tokens) use advanced cryptographic features such as ring signatures in Monero, shielded transactions in Zcash, and optional privacy in Dash that obscure transaction details, user identities, and fund flows.
Regulators view this as a high risk for money laundering, terror financing, or bypassing sanctions, making it difficult for platforms to fulfill KYC/AML traceability requirements under India's Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Scope: Applies to all FIU-registered exchanges (currently around 49 platforms operating compliantly in India).
Actions required: Immediate cessation of support for these assets, including delisting, blocking deposits/withdrawals, and prohibiting trading pairs.
