NEW: After a trans activist “sued the living bejeesus out of the city,” New York is now legally obligated to open 4 homeless shelters exclusively for trans and gender-nonconforming people. >The first opened to the tune of $7,200 per bed per month (~60% more than a typical NYC shelter). >Under the city’s settlement, trans and gender-nonconforming New Yorkers ALSO must now be admitted to any men’s or women’s shelter, whichever affirms their identity. >Effectively, this means NYC no longer has sex-segregated homeless shelters, which have been in place for decades. As @BessByers writes, the real crime here — in addition to the exorbitant cost/lavish services for trans shelter residents, including yoga, meditation, and cooking classes — is the erosion of sex-based protections for females entering the shelter system to escape abuse. Many of them would prefer NOT to live with mentally ill males. Full story 👇
