It's not rocket science, if you get paid to promote a company, you disclose it There are plenty of creators out there who do this (and i'm proud to call a lot of them friends) Unfortunately, there are many more, who do not Can argue til the cows come home about the merits and ethics and virtue of content creators taking such deals, but on this part at least, it's unambigious what the right thing to do is (in part because it's the literal freaking law in a lot of countries) There are a lot of gray areas between being paid for a post to being an "advisor", or an investor in a "KOL round", or having newsletter sponsors that you shout out on X (like I do) or whatever... but the premise is the exact same: if you're being compensated (in USD, tokens, very favourable dealflow terms, whatever) as payment for you promoting a company or project... you freaking disclose it Some way, some how, just do it Why would someone not disclose? Because they want to deceive their followers, it's as simple as that Why do they want to deceive them? For more views, more money, more something — but it's for their benefit, and to the detriment of their followers and anyone that consumes their content Want to go above and beyond with your disclosures? Check the link in my bio, and do something like that If as a creator this still doesn't appeal to you, think about your own self interests then — if you get "found out" for making undisclosed shills, your reputation takes a heavy hit Reputations take years to build and a moment to lose, so, like, try not to lose yours over something that's so easy and simple to avoid by writing like 5 extra words on a post This isn't a subtweet or specifically about the drama going around today, I have no idea what really happened there and haven't seen any convincing evidence yet, but it just made me think about this topic again and I wanted to share some thoughts
