I'm genuinely a skeptic of the relationship the US has with Europe, insofar as I think it needs a more equitable reset, but this Greenalnd thing is so fucking insane and counterproductive to our goals.
I've attempted to squint and figure out what the play here is and genuinely it's just that Trump is senile and Stephen Miller is his vizier on foreign policy and a sycophant.
The existing trend that the US should be pushing against is European trade ties with China. German FDI stock in China, as a share of GDP, is roughly 2–3x higher than the US. Large german giants like BASF and Volkswagen have put a lot of production in China.
Europe wants us to protect them against Russia, but for good reason (China is far away), does not want to join an anti hegemonic coalition against China, except when put insane pressure on them (or we own a chunk of the company like ASML).
We should be attempting to reset this and trade support against Russia for support against China! Deranged threats against Greenland, which are increasingly looking very real to the Europeans, and to me, are not helping.
