Apple spent years stuck on one question for Siri: LLMs running on the cloud or privacy-first on-device small models? In the end, Apple picked Google’s Gemini to power Siri. It makes sense: - Gemini leads in multimodality - OpenAI’s device + personalized ChatGPT are direct competitors of Apple I don't think Apple is giving up building its own foundation models. They’ve spent billions on GPUs, hired many AI researchers, and have the iPhone as a massive distribution channel. Once they have collected enough data via the new Gemini-powered Siri, switching to Apple’s own models is always an option.
