When this scene in "Braveheart" (1995) was first written, screenwriter Randall Wallace had Murron use a rose, but someone who read the script pointed out that the rose, a traditional symbol of England, would be inappropriate in the story, so it became a thistle (the symbol of Scotland) instead.
