VMware Workstation Pro is now free to use in the personal version, available for both Windows and Mac, and it's very easy to use.
First, let me say upfront: "For the Windows installation ISO file, please download it from Microsoft. If you use a packaged version from someone else, it adds another layer of risk."
For Linux, just download the official Ubuntu release; the package is fine.
If you don't want to gamble on whether "opening the repo will cause issues," the safest way is to use VMware to open the repo, rather than opening it directly on your local machine.
The simple process is as follows:
- Step 1: Install VMware or VirtualBox
You can install VMware Workstation Pro on your local machine; as long as it can run VMs, it's fine.
- Step 2: Install the operating system in the VM
Create a clean operating system (Windows / Linux is fine) in VMware,
this VM is only for "viewing untrusted code," do not log in with personal accounts.
- Step 3: Do not bridge the network
Set the VM network mode to NAT,
do not use Bridged, to avoid the VM directly accessing your internal network.
- Step 4: Do not mount local hard drives
Do not mount your local Documents, Desktop, or home directories into the VM.
Otherwise, it would be equivalent to sending your private keys and SSH keys directly in.
- Step 5: Install development tools in the VM
Install VS Code, Node, and Git inside the VM,
the repo should also only be cloned in the VM....
