ethereum’s belief in web3 is still viewed as idealistic but ultimately will be proven prescient crypto beyond finance is inevitable. it’s just taking longer than most of us expected that so many people think crypto is only good for trading and payments will be seen as profoundly pessimistic in the future. like paul krugman’s 1998 prediction that the internet’s impact would be “no greater than the fax machine” lots of ink has been spilled over why mass crypto adoption is taking so long. the boring but right answer is these things take time if you look at the early bitcoin forums, most of what was talked about circa 2010 is playing out right now. companies dedicated to acquiring crypto, wall street shilling, sovereigns spinning up reserve funds. it just took longer than everyone expected web3 will be similar. last cycle people thought the metaverse was here when zuck aped the ticker. we have since oscillated in the opposite direction - zero belief in anything beyond pure financial applications my hope is that we can rediscover some of the early web3 ideas ethereum birthed. a more expansive vision for crypto will help attract talent beyond just finance types and also increase the diversity of experimentation in the space
