Denmark and Sweden issue statements after Trump appoints envoy for Greenland.
Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry today as the U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen reacted by stating:
“This confirms the continued American interest in Greenland. However, we insist that everyone – including the U.S. – must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
In a subsequent interview with Danish broadcaster TV2, he provided his fuller personal reaction:
“I am deeply upset by this appointment of a special envoy. And I am particularly upset by his [Landry’s] statements, which we find completely unacceptable.”
He also announced he would summon the U.S. ambassador to Copenhagen for an explanation.
Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard quickly backed him up by saying:
“It’s for Denmark and Greenland to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland. Sweden stands wholeheartedly behind its neighbour on these issues and will always stand up for international law.”
