September 22, 1975. A passerby comforts an elderly woman who was knocked over in the ensuing panic after a shot was fired at President Gerald Ford in San Francisco....
On that day, President Gerald Ford was leaving San Francisco’s St. Francis Hotel when a woman in the crowd, Sara Jane Moore, fired a shot at him from across the street. The bullet narrowly missed, striking a wall before bystanders tackled and disarmed her. The failed assassination attempt came just 17 days after another woman, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, had tried to shoot Ford in Sacramento, making him one of the few U.S. presidents targeted twice within a single month.
The photo captures the immediate human chaos that followed. As the crowd scattered in fear, several civilians were injured, including the elderly woman pictured, who was helped by a passerby until medical aid arrived. The moment became symbolic of the unrest and distrust that characterized 1970s America, a decade marked by political scandal, protest, and social tension.
Sara Jane Moore was sentenced to life in prison but was released on parole in 2007 after serving 32 years. She later described her act as a misguided political statement rather than a personal attack on Ford.
